Jalandhara Bandha

The third level of energy locks (bandhas) is located in the throat region, also the seat of the 5th Chakra (Vishuddha), our center for creativity and communication.

Together activating the Jalandhara Bandha and opening the Throat Chakra we can control the flow of energy by keeping it moving up towards the brain, Ajna (the third eye/ brow chakra), and Sahasrara (the crown chakra) and higher self. Even though it is not technically the same as mudras the locks can be used similarly since they do both induce a certain channeling of energy in the body which is conducive for higher practices of dhyana and Samadhi.

By opening the heart, and lengthening the neck before tucking in the chin we press against two important glands – the thyroid and the para thyroid glands. These two glands regulate the body metabolism improving health and vitality. Therefore justifying the ancient belief that this lock gives us immortality. The brain is said to release Amati or nectar and this lock is used to keep it from moving down towards the Soar Plexus (3rd Chakra) where is would otherwise be burnt

This lock can be used to effectively restrict the air passage and block the flow of air. A traditional pranayama (breathing) practice of Ujjayi breath to form the basis of the deepest breathing exercises required to regulate the activities of mind and increase the concentration.

The word bandha means 'to hold, lock or embrace.' ...These potent practices train you to direct your prana, or vital energy, to different centers of your body...The basic principle with each bandha is first to accumulate energy in an area of your physiology, then release it. This process of building a force and then unleashing it discharges obstacles from the pathways of energy circulation. – The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga: A Practical Guide to Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit © 2004 p 113
